The key objectives for this project were to complement the modern beauty of the newly constructed home while gradually transitioning the landscape into the natural beauty of the surrounding woodlands. One crucial element was to incorporate a small Japanese-style inspired garden visible from both the master bedroom and bathroom. A large and level lawn was also requested for the sloping rear yard. For this, a retaining wall was built and over 500 cubic yards of additional soil was placed to build up the grade an additional 4 feet, leveling off the yard and creating an opportunity to design an “infinity lawn edge.”.

An easily maneuverable driveway with ample parking for guests was important. We achieved this without detracting from the house by using irregular plant beds along the edges of the driveway. The stair stepping layout of the driveway edges was largely inspired by working around the tree protection fence during construction. The continuous score line pattern added a decorative element.

Our efforts resulted in a beautiful landscape consisting of clean, modern lines softened with plants and seemingly random, irregular borders that transition into the native woods. Gorgeous boulders and natural stone juxtapose the formed concrete and blend the natural with the man-made. Soft grasses introduce a gentle texture, blurring the edges of the patio, driveways, and walls. Concrete and cedar, stone and steel, and plants and water all flow together to create a modern woodland retreat!
