Houseplants don’t have the ability to cook you dinner or walk the dog but after a quick tour through Pinterest or Instagram it is clear that indoor plants offer your household much more than just something pretty to look at (as if that isn’t enough!) Here’s a list of reasons why houseplants are beneficial for your health and wellness.

Air purifiers

Plants absorb some particulates from within the air at the same time that they take in carbon dioxide, which is then processed into oxygen through photosynthesis. But that’s not all! Microorganisms associated with the plants and microorganisms present in the potting soil, are also responsible for much of the air-cleaning effects.

A few of our favorite plants for cleaning the air are:

Aglaonema(Chinese Evergreen)

Dracaena

Peace Lily

Snake Plant

Philodendron

Mood lifters

Hospital patients with plants in their rooms are more positive and have lower blood pressure and stress levels. Less indoor air pollutants plus increased humidity & more oxygen makes anyone feel better!

Productivity boosters

Similarly, indoor plants may make people smarter in the workplace by allowing them to stay alert and reducing mental fatigue.

Emotional Influencers

Color plays a psychological effect on our bodies and minds. Certain colors can evoke certain feelings and houseplants can subtly influence our emotions. Green is known to symbolize nature, tranquility and calmness. Green is also thought to reduce stress!

Herbal Remedies

Culinary and medicinal herbs can be easily grown on a kitchen windowsill within reach to pinch into your tea or tonight’s dinner. Consider peppermint- it can be used in your tea to add a pep to your step, or thrown into your tub to help you relax.

Get going on your spring cleaning by adding a few new indoor plants to your home or office (I’d have one in my car if I could keep it warm enough)! Come to one of our Garden Centers to learn more and get inspired to ‘adopt’ a plant for 2017; surely it will add more than just beauty to your life.
