Paperwhites (Narcissus tazetta) & Amaryllis (Hippeastrum species) bring decadent blossoms indoors during the winter months. These beauties add vibrant color and fragrance to wow you and your guests this Holiday season. Choose from our custom planted selection or make your own for a unique hostess gift.

STEP 1 – CHOOSE THE CONTAINER

This is the one time that you can use vessels that don’t have drainage without feeling guilty for slowly drowning your plants, which opens up a whole new palette. So have fun and get creative with options like galvanized metal, wood, ceramic and glass. Bulbs prefer to have cramped roots so pack containers full of Paperwhites and error on the side of smaller pots for Amaryllis.

STEP 2 – PLANT THE BULBS

Use a layer of horticultural charcoal at the bottom and then fill in with well-draining soil or pebbles, remember to leave about 1/3 of the bulb uncovered at the top of the container. I like to use pebbles if my container is clear, otherwise soil is less expensive and will still look decorative with a layer of pretty rocks or moss on top.  If you’re feeling extra festive you can use colored glass or jewels to add some bling. Paperwhites take 4-6 weeks to flower & Amaryllis (Dutch grown) take 8-12 weeks.

STEP 3 – WATCH THEM GROW BEFORE YOUR EYES

Once the bulb(s) are planted add just enough water to moisten the root zone of the pot, don’t water again until you see green growth and then just enough to keep the plants hydrated. The warmer the location the faster they will grow but too speedy of growth can cause the stems to get tall and top heavy.

*Try a tip to keep Paperwhites stems shorter & sturdier; once the foliage is 2” tall water with a 5% alcohol and water solution. You can use liquor (80 proof) in a 1 to 7 ratio or rubbing alcohol (10%) in a 1 to 1 ratio.
