Cole Crops (Brassica oleracea)

A large group including broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, collards, kale, & kohlrabi. These crops prefer cool weather and consistent moisture so are best sown in late summer or fall for winter and fall production. A light frost brings out their natural sweetness.

Care: Full sun – part shade, tolerant of range of soils, good drainage, regular fertilizer, moisture & mulch, space 10-12” apart, prefers cool weather, replant often, best from seed or transplants.

Best in full sun but prefers cool weather; plants tend to bolt if stressed for moisture or nutrition. Space about 18” apart and add organic fertilizer at planting time; can be direct-sown or from transplants. Pests can include aphids, whitefly & cabbage moths – grow under row cover for best protection.
