Celebrate Mother’s Day by giving her a hanging basket full of colorful flowers to delight her all summer. Lush baskets, overflowing with blooms can brighten up a porch or patio area and add color to a shady corner and are a great gift idea this Mother's Day.

Moms appreciate beauty: she will love looking at the bright, colorful basket from inside the house and appreciate how it enhances the outdoor landscape as it grows. We have a range of colors and styles to fit in with almost any décor.

Moms are nurturing: she will easily be able to care for her gift and will be delighted with its growth and longevity if given a few tips on how to keep it looking great throughout the season; she grew you pretty well didn’t she?

Most moms are busy: a colorful basket full of blooming flowers can be just the thing to create a festive atmosphere at home or provide ready-made color to dress up the patio for a party or special celebration. It only takes a few minutes each day to care for your hanging basket by giving it water – the most important part of its care. In addition to water, flowers bloom better and plants are more lush when they are regularly fed. Remember all those meals mom made for you? These baskets only need fertilizing about every 7 to 10 days with a liquid plant food easily applied with a watering can. We make it easy! Gift her with our hanging basket care kit to ensure her basket thrives through the summer.

Mom’s keep us clean and pest-free (ok maybe that’s a stretch): flowers need occasional trimming and removal of some of the spent blossoms; this can be done throughout the growing season or just as needed.  There are a few pests that might want to harm your plants so vigilance and awareness is the key to good health; bring in a plant sample or ask one of our garden professionals for a solution to your pest problem should one arise.

Tips to make mom proud: Fuchsia baskets are a favorite of hummingbirds and may lure these acrobatic cuties into the garden with the promise of a sip of sweet nectar. If you don’t have a  place to hang a basket just remove the plastic or wire hangers and use the planted basket as a quick drop-in solution to fill empty pots for instant color.

Know your stuff: A few things to keep in mind when making your selection will help you make the best choice. What container size and material is best suited to your conditions, and how much weight will your hook hold? We carry 12”, 14” and larger baskets; large baskets tend to be easier to maintain and can make a greater impact, however they may get very heavy when fully watered and extra-large ones need to hang from sturdy supports with substantial hardware. Although the plants should grow to cover the pot, there are options for what material the pot is made from. Standard plastic containers are basic, do a good job of holding moisture, and often have a shallow well for water to linger towards the bottom as an emergency reservoir if needed by thirsty plants; however, they are not, in themselves very attractive containers. For a nicer looking basket choose one made with wire and lined with coco fiber or a rustic one made of a wicker-like material but keep in mind that these more porous materials may tend to dry out faster than plastic and can require more frequent watering.

No matter what you choose, mom is sure to love it and with just a few steps required to keep it looking great she will be able to enjoy your gift for several months in the garden. Our garden centers are brimming with fresh shipments of baskets just in time for the ‘big’ weekend.
