Although we celebrate our 59th anniversary in 2015, our experience in the business dates back much further, to 1927 when grandparents Bernard and Florence Esch launched a one-person lawn maintenance business and later lived their dream by owning a wholesale rhododendron nursery.
In 1956, their daughter Merle met Robert Snodgrass. Robert operated the family garden center, nursery and landscaping business, which he called Seven Dees. The two were married and had seven children, all with the first names beginning with the letter “D”.
In 1975 Robert's sons Dennis & Drake took over the business. Two years later, David purchased the landscape portion of the business from Dennis, then brought in brothers Dean and Drew as partners, ensuring the business stayed in the family, then in its third generation of ownership
Today, we are on our fourth generation of family ownership by three of the Snodgrass brothers. David and Dean share administrative duties and work on the financial side of the business, working on long range planning to ensure quality and success. Drew is involved in the landscape design side of the business, is an expert with new clients, and produces award-winning designs! All three work together to help the business to run smoothly. We believe a longstanding commitment to quality & service has kept the organization in business throughout the decades. Whether we are helping a “do it yourself” customer at our garden centers or offering complete design/build services and maintenance, we’ve always tried to do a great job in every project, and to build trust and relationships with clients that last a lifetime.
Seven Snodgrass family members are currently involved in Dennis’ 7 Dees today. Operating a 4 generation family business is one measure of success, but as significant is our many employees who have been with the company for 20, 30 and 40 years and now many are in their second generation working for the company. We are most proud of our people and our success as a team.
Safety is a #1 concern of all employees of Dennis’ 7 Dees. We have created a culture of safety that is demonstrated by the awards we regularly receive both on a local and national level. Our MOD rating is far below the industry average, which shows our dedication and commitment to keeping our employees and others safe.
The Yard, Garden and Patio Show presented by Dennis’ 7 Dees has grown into the largest consumer gardening exposition of its kind in Portland.
While you are there, enjoy display gardens, incredible edible gardens, small garden vignettes, cracked pots art, green markets, celebrity experts and guest speakers, live music, seminars, beverages gardens, and you can’t forget about the kids digs area! Bring the whole family to enjoy this outstanding show.
The Snodgrass family has been part of the Portland community for several decades. We understand that it is the community that we rely on for our success, and we look for ways to help our neighbors in need in meaningful ways. Human Solutions is just one of our many causes when “neighbors are helping neighbors” Last year the Dennis’ 7 Dees Charity golf benefit donated over $100,000 to Human Solutions for the second year in a row. This is just one of the many ways we connect and support our local community.
Dennis’ 7 Dees also takes part in an Annual Day of Service donating time and skilled labor to organizations that need help but are unable to afford it. In 2012 we donated the installation of a drip irrigation system to Zenger Farms, an educational working farm that teaches children about growing sustainably. This year we worked with Human Solutions to revamp their Day Break Shelter in efforts to give the children a safer place to play.
We are a company with deep roots, employing 100+ hardworking lifelong employees. Our local focus extends beyond the landscapes and gardening knowledge we provide. We are dedicated to supporting our community and helping it grow along with us.
