About Us

History:

Robert and Merle Snodgrass in 1955

Although we celebrate our 58th anniversary in 2014, our experience in the business dates back much further, to 1927 when grandparents Bernard and Florence Esch launched a one-person lawn maintenance business, and later lived their dream by owning a wholesale rhododendron nursery.  In 1956, their daughter Merle met Robert Snodgrass.  The two were married and had seven children, all with the first names beginning with the letter “D”.  Robert operated the family garden center, nursery and landscaping business, which he called Seven Dees, until 1975 when sons Dennis and Drake took over.

Two years later, David purchased the landscape portion of the business from Dennis, then brought in brothers Dean and Drew as partners, ensuring the business stayed in the family, then in its third generation of ownership

Current:

Today, we are on our fourth generation of family ownership and President David Snodgrass believes a longstanding commitment to quality landscaping design, installation and maintenance has kept the organization in business throughout the decades.  We’ve always been committed to quality and service and we’ve never wavered from that.  Whether we are helping a “do it yourself” customer at our garden centers or offering complete design/build services and maintenance, we’ve always tried to do a great job in every project, and to build trust and relationships with clients that last over the long term.

Currently there are four Dennis’ 7 Dees retail garden center locations, three in the Portland metro and one in Seaside.  Dennis’ 7 Dees is owned and operated totally separate from Drake’s 7 Dees.  Because of the common history and shared 7 Dees name, the two separate businesses are easily confused as the same, but they are not.  The two businesses compete professionally, yet in a very family friendly way.

The Brothers:

Drew, David and Dean Snodgrass

Dennis’ 7 Dees Landscaping & Garden Centers are owned and operated by three of the Snodgrass brothers. David and Dean share administrative duties and work on the financial side of the business, working on long range planning to ensure quality and success. Drew is involved in the landscape design side of the business, is an expert with new clients, and produces award-winning designs! All three work together to help the business to run smoothly.

The Next Generation:

Seven Snodgrass family members are currently involved in Dennis’ 7 Dees today.  Operating a 4 generation family business is one measure of success, but as significant is our many employees who have been with the company for 20, 30 and 40 years and now many are in their second generation working for the company.  We are most proud of our people and our success as a team.

Community Involvement:

The Snodgrass family has been part of the Portland community for several decades.  We understand that it is the community that we rely on for our success, and we look for ways to help our neighbors in need in meaningful ways.  Human Solutions is just one of our many causes when “neighbors are helping neighbors”  Last year the Dennis’ 7 Dees Charity golf benefit donated $30,000 to Human Solutions and this year we surpassed our goal of $50,000.  This is just one of the many ways we connect and support our local community.  Learn more.

Our business is built on family tradition, quality plants and exceptional service.
